Vaccination

I would like to make everyone aware that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are now in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats. These changes will certainly present an economic challenge to vets. However politics, traditions, or the doctor's economic well being should not be a factor in medical decisions. Some organizations have come up with a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to appease those who fear loss of income versus those concerned about potential side effects. Not only are annual boosters unnecessary, they subject your pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia.  There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of vaccines.

Puppies receive antibodies through their mother's milk. This natural protection can last up to 14 weeks. Puppies and kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 14 weeks of age.  Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and suppress the immune system.

I choose not to vaccinate my dogs or myself for that matter.  I have confidence that my dogs will handle most challenges easily, and if they do get sick with an infectious disease that it will be fairly easily treated with homeopathy and/or other modes of natural therapy. I do not take risk lightly. I always accept it and prepare for it. I do not judge anyone for their own personal decisions as I know we all try to do the best for our four footed friends.  Any decision made on behalf of the life of our dogs should never be taken lightly or without full understanding of possible consequences of whichever decision we arrive at.

When my opinion is asked on this subject this is what I tell those who feel the need to use vaccines.  I personally do not agree with vaccination however if after doing your own research you still feel the need to vaccinate here is what I would recommend to you:

  • Only vaccinate with one single vaccine at a time at least one month apart and do not vaccinate an animal under the age of 14 weeks of age.

  • Only vaccinate for diseases that are life-threatening in your area or an area you are travelling to.

  • If you have a small breed ask to have the vaccine quantity decreased to better suit body weight. They will give the same dosage to a toy as they do to a giant.  Even a large breed should only be getting half the dosage they are presently given.

  • If your dog has been vaccinated after the age of 6 months do not vaccinate again unless it is required by law. And never, never vaccinate a sick or stressed animal. Administer or increase "natural" vitamin C (calcium ascorbate or pure rosehip powder) prior to and after any vaccine.  If you notice ANY symptoms directly after or anytime within the next 3 months post vaccine contact a "classical" homeopath to remedy the problem before it goes deeper into the body. Some common symptoms to watch for are itching or skin problems, skin tags, warts or bumps on the skin, diarrhoea or vomiting, runny nose or eyes, aggression, extreme shyness or fear, tail chasing, weakness in back legs and/or fainting, seizures.

If you know of anyone who has a Weimaraner, please let them know that shots for leptospirosis can cause severe brain damage and should never be administered to that breed.
